Audi RS5 DTM racer revealed at Geneva

The Audi RS5 DTM racecar due to compete in the European touring car series in 2013 has been revealed at the Geneva motor show.

Based on the road-going Audi RS5, the new DTM racer is an evolution of the 2012 car that has spent the winter with the Audi Sport DTM team while they identified if any of the car’s 4000 components could be even further optimised.

While a purpose built racecar, Audi’s head of motorsport, Wolfgang Ullrich, said the RS5 DTM and its namesake road car shared more than just a name.

“The performance data of the current RS5 and RS5 DTM are very similar.”

Member of the board for technical development at Audi, Wolfgang Durheimer, explained the German brand’s relationship between racing and road cars.

“Motorsport is an integral part of the Audi DNA and is not an end in itself for our company,” he said.

“At the end of the day, our customers benefit from the victories on the racetracks, because we attach great value to technology transfer between motorsport and production.”

ABT Sportsline has upgraded its program for the Audi R8 GT in time for the Geneva Motor Show.

Audi tuning specialist ABT Sportsline has updated its GTR aftermarket program for the Audi R8 GT in time for a reveal at next week’s Geneva Motor Show. First on the agenda was shaving weight off the supercar. This was achieved by fitting a new carbon-fiber aero kit including a new hood, front and rear aprons, new side skirts and a rear wing, resulting in a curb weight trimmed by 110 kg down to 1,515 kg. Other exterior mods include a set of 19-inch alloys, a stainless-steel exhaust, and an adjustable coilover sports suspension.

Under the hood, ABT tweaked the 5.2-liter V10 FSI engine, increasing output from 550 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque to 620 hp and 405 lb-ft. The result is an improved 0-62 mph time of 3.2 seconds and a new top speed of 202 mph.

Power comes from the same normally-aspirated V8 4.2-liter engine but instead of 450 HP (331 kW) it now delivers 470 HP (345 kW) thanks to the new exhaust system featuring lateral dual pipes. The standard RS5 needs 4.6 seconds to complete the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h), while ABT’s version will do it 0.3 seconds quicker.

Sitting on 20-inch alloy wheels, this custom Audi RS5 has a new front apron, front splitter, side skirts and rear wing – all of which are manufactured from carbon fiber. The same material was used for the diffuser and hood.
The interior cabin is decorated in black and red Alcantara with carbon fiber door panels, racing stripes on the bucket seats, along with a stainless steel roll cage and four-point seat belts.
